Dr. Jemilah Mahmood and her legacy in MERCY

Maybe some of us doesn't knew there was a person name Dr. Jemilah Mahmood in this world, maybe some might wonder where is this person live..wheter in America,Britain,Rusia or other big country but certainly not Malaysia..this country isn't qualified enough to impress human being..but you are WRONG! you are certainly wrong about our beloved country, Malaysia and about this person..Dr. Jemilah Mahmood is not an ordinary person..As the founder of MERCY Malaysia, she is a symbol of the volunteering mission in many country. But in Monday, 03 August 2009; world have been shocked by the stepping down of its inaugural president and founder, Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood.

Dr. Jemilah Mahmood has been appointed to the post of Chief of the Humanitarian Response Branch, United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA). She will be based at its headquarters in New York, effective 15 August 2009. Dr. Jemilah Mahmood who founded MERCY Malaysia in June 1999. Through MERCY Malaysia, she has managed to bring together Malaysians and even some non‐Malaysians from all walks of life with the common goal to serve those in need, irrespective of race, religion, culture or boundary.

In 1999, MERCY Malaysia had its humble beginnings in the office of its founder in Ampang Puteri Hospital in Ampang, Selangor. Since then, it has grown into an international non‐governmental organisation (NGO) with over 30 projects in nine countries namely Sudan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Iraq, Myanmar and Malaysia. On the home front, MERCY Malaysia serves the local communities through outreach programmes in various states within the country.

In her last speech as the inaugural president of MERCY, Dr. Jemilah said..

“Like thousands of other Malaysians, MERCY Malaysia has given us the platform to unite and contribute to the society. It has given us an opportunity, as ordinary people to do extraordinary things and to realise the inter‐connectedness of this world. If we truly want to see change and global peace, we all need to play our part. This continuous effort for us at MERCY Malaysia and should grow and strengthen even when there is a change at the helm!”

MERCY Malaysia will continue its work in providing medical relief and humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities irrespective of race, religion, culture and boundary. Its work is supported by the large member and volunteer base and their commitment and dedication have been the driving force of MERCY Malaysia’s success...
